My inspiration - DJ Kool - Herk 

[1967- present]

Kool DJ Herc or DJ Kool as he’s famously known is an American Hip-hop artist whose power within the music industry was well known in the 1970’s. His image was generated in New York City through a style called ‘hard funk’ which outlines the live style of gang violence and slang interpretation by alternative music expression. It imitates the violent gang culture of ‘the Bronx’ and the popular disco style music which he played a big role in during the 70’s.

Born into a family of Jamaican decent and one of 6, his early life and education lead to ‘The Bronx’ new York where his taste for music further expanded, immigrating to such a city of such vast and rich musical culture, at the age of 12 he attended ‘Alfred E. Smith career and technical Education High school’ at which similarly a violent atmosphere of gangs and instability grew during 1973.

His ‘Break and style development came through solo records as Herc used the focus of on a short, heavily part of the ‘break’. During the 70’s it was favoured so he isolated the break and prolonged it by changing two record players; as one record ran out he put in the following to elongate the music at his disposal. His music on the street became inspiration as he developed his passion throughout the 70’s as he became a ‘influential artist’. During his later years he appeared in Hollywood’s motion pictures  to take on hip-hop, beat street in the 1980’s (1984, Orion). 

PART B

Royal Academy of Arts


In the royal arts academy we looked at an amazing artist named ai Weiwei. I liked the exhibition as we looked at many of his creations which included a collage of crabs in a corner in one of the rooms. Around this particular gallery, old footage with a projector on the wall showed my group and I historical context of the artist. Together with that we had to fill in a sheet answering questions about what we thought of the exhibition. Personally, I enjoyed the diversity in Ai Weiwei's art and I think its unique and the quality in his creations to makes him stand out since I've never seen that kind of art. At the end of the session we discussed our answers as a group; this was lead by the wonderful Georgie Fay. I disliked very little about this about this exhibition since it created such a positive atmosphere This exhibition was during November 2015.

This video above you is a introduction to what we've been doing and what this amazing collective is all about. The OG group or the October art gallery collective is a young and organised group of dedicated young people who travel to the gallery in central London to do creative projects such as painting activities and filming projects. However, this gallery isn't just limited to the activities that creative collective groups do inside the gallery, groups of young people come together and visit other galleries and exhibitions. Every Monday and during the holidays these young people meet and explore other exhibitions as well. Fantastic isn't it?
